19 Jun News & notes
If you can’t stand the heat … check out this cool news from your NCWorks Career Centers in Charlotte!
Reminder: office closings
Your NCWorks Career Center at 1401 W. Morehead St. will close on Friday, June 26, at 1 p.m. for staff training. Please plan your visits accordingly.
All three Charlotte-area NCWorks Career Centers will be closed all day on Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day (July 4). We’ll look forward to seeing you again on Monday, July 6!
The workforce-system shift from operations under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 1998 to the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) of 2014 on July 1 means the updating of many processes, procedures, resources and tools.
NCWorks Online is one of them.
North Carolina’s job-search website will be offline and unavailable to job-seekers and employers from 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, to 8 a.m. on Monday, July 6, as the state re-tools the site to accommodate changes associated with WIOA.
Please plan your search activities around the outage.
The stars were out and shining in the mid-day heat on June 17 at the third annual SNAP (Share Network Access Point) annual luncheon.
(SNAP sites provide access to job-search resources for job-seekers for whom transportation to one of our NCWorks Career Centers.)
Debra Dixon, community partnerships and programs manager, presented special recognition awards to representatives of Hope Haven, Inc.; the Latin American Coalition; and the main branch of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library for their outstanding contributions to getting people back to work.
For the second year running, the 2015 Triangle Award for Star SNAP Partner of the Year went to Grace-Mar, Inc. Dixon shared that, to-date in Program Year 2014 – 2015, the organization that focuses on economic self-sufficiency through job-readiness has administered 3,919 assessments, conducted 48 workshops and had contact with 52 employers who interviewed 979 participants. Most importantly, 332 clients have been hired. Shawn Hill, vice chair of the board of Grace-Mar, accepted the award.
Dixon also revealed the SNAP partners’ impressive aggregated statistics year-to-date:
- 40,105 visits
- 734 NCWorks Online registrations
- 644 referrals to the nearest NCWorks Career Center
- 3,349 skills assessments provided
- 595 workshops offered
- 4,245 workshop attendees
NCWorks Online goes mobile … for vets first
The N.C. Department of Commerce has released mobile app for NCWorks Online users!
Right now, the app is available specifically for veterans. Veteran job-seekers who log in using their NCWorks Online username and password will see all the jobs that are on “veterans hold” status and be able to search for positions by MOC (Military Occupation Classification) code on the Quick Search page.
Other standard features for regular job-seekers will be announced when the NCWorks mobile app is made available to everyone this fall.
