Workforce Investment Act (WIA)

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) is legislation, passed in 1998, that reformed federal job training programs and created a new, comprehensive workforce system. Its focus is to help citizens access the tools needed to manage their careers through information and quality services, including skills training for individuals who are both eligible and suitable.

To learn if you’re eligible for WIA training funds, follow these steps:

1. Review Introducing Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Training carefully to understand the eligibility components, program options and program limitations before committing to the WIA process.

2. Review the Frequently Asked Questions for additional information.

3. If you think you are eligible and can benefit from WIA services, go to your account at to register for a group WIA Information Session:

           a. Go to the OTHER SERVICES tab

            b. Click on APPOINTMENT CENTER

            c. Choose EVENTS CALENDAR

            d. Click on SHOW FILTER CRITERIA and select “Charlotte Works Work Force Development Board”

            e. Click on “Charlotte Mecklenburg Employer Engagement Center” in the drop down

            f. Click on FILTER

            g. Choose your desired event and click on it. Confirm date & time and click on REGISTER at the bottom of the page

If the “Register” link is not available, the session is full. Go back to the calendar and select another session. If none are available in the current month, revisit the website on the 15th of the month to view the next month’s schedule. (If the 15th falls on Saturday, the calendar for the next month will be posted on Friday the 14th; if the 15th falls on Sunday, the calendar will be posted on Monday the 16th.)

You will not receive an email confirmation for the Information Session, but you are expected to attend. If you’re unable to be there, go back onto NCWorks Online to cancel your registration so that another job-seeker may take your place.
